Citação 17: Lutero

The summons of death comes to us all, and no one can die for another. Every one must fight his own battle with death by himself, alone. We can shout into another's hears, but every one must himself be prepared for the time of death, for I will not be with you then, nor you with me. Therefore every one must himself be armed with the chief things which concern a Christian. And these are what you, my beloved, have heard from me many days ago.

Martin Luther, Sermon on Invocavit Sunday (9-3-1522); AE 51:70

Citação 16: Lutero

We must [...] have love and through love we must do to one another as God has done to us through faith. For without love faith is nothing, as St. Paul says: If I had the tongues of angels and could speak of the highest things in faith, and have not love, I am nothing.

Martin Luther, Sermon on Invocavit Sunday (9-3-1522); AE 51:71

W. H. Auden: "Luther" (1940)

With conscience cocked to listen for the thunder,
He saw the Devil busy in the wind,
Over the chiming steeples and then under
The doors of nuns and doctors who had sinned.

What apparatus could stave off disaster
Or cut the brambles of man's error down?
Flesh was a silent dog that bites its master,
World a still pond in which its children drown.

The fuse of Judgement spluttered in his head:
"Lord smoke these honeyed insects from their hives.
All Works, Great Men, Societies are bad.
The Just shall live by Faith..." he cried in dread.

And men and women of the world were glad,
Who'd never cared or trembled in their lives.

Citação 12: Lutero

See, according to this rule the good things we have from God should flow from one to the other and be common to all, so that everyone should 'put on' his neighbor and so conduct himself toward him as if he himself were in the other's place. From Christ the good things have flowed and are flowing into us. He has so "put on" us and acted for us as if he had been what we are. From us they flow on to those who have need of them so that I should lay before God my faith and my righteousness that they may cover and intercede for the sins of my neighbor which I take upon myself and so labor and serve in them as if they were my very own. That is what Christ did for us. This is true love and the genuine rule of a Christian life. Love is true and genuine where there is true and genuine faith. Hence the Apostle says of love in 1 Corinthians 13[:5] that 'it does not seek its own.'

We conclude, therefore, that a Christian lives not in himself, but in Christ and in his neighbor. Otherwise he is not a Christian. He lives in Christ through faith, in his neighbor through love. By faith he is caught up beyond himself into God. By love he descends beneath himself into his neighbor. Yet he always remains in God and in his love, as Christ says in John 1[:51], 'Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.'

Martin Luther, The Freedom of a Christian, 1520; AE 31:371

Citação 10: Lutero

The term 'our Father' refers to a confidence that we can place solely in God. No other can assist us to get to heaven than this one Father. The Scriptures say, 'No one ascends into heaven but he who descends from heaven, the Son of man' [John 3:13]. In his skin and on his back we too must ascend. Thus all who are heavy-laden, and even those who do not know the meaning of these words, may well pray this prayer.

Martin Luther, An Exposition of the Lord's Prayer [...], 1519; AE 42:23

Notas da viagem transatlântica n.º 6

The mind is unable to judge the truth as such, although it is compelled to say, when entirely confident, "This is true." For example, the mind declares with infallible assurance that three and seven make ten, and yet it cannot adduce any reason why that is true, although it cannot deny its truth.

Martin Luther, The Babylonian Captivity of the Church, 1520

Citação 4: Lutero

Learning, wisdom, and writers must rule the world.

[Frase atribuída a Lutero, mas é provavelmente espúria.]

Citação 2: Lutero

A foοl often says wise things and frequently sages speak very foolishly.
