See, according to this rule the good things we have from God should flow from one to the other and be common to all, so that everyone should 'put on' his neighbor and so conduct himself toward him as if he himself were in the other's place. From Christ the good things have flowed and are flowing into us. He has so "put on" us and acted for us as if he had been what we are. From us they flow on to those who have need of them so that I should lay before God my faith and my righteousness that they may cover and intercede for the sins of my neighbor which I take upon myself and so labor and serve in them as if they were my very own. That is what Christ did for us. This is true love and the genuine rule of a Christian life. Love is true and genuine where there is true and genuine faith. Hence the Apostle says of love in 1 Corinthians 13[:5] that 'it does not seek its own.'

We conclude, therefore, that a Christian lives not in himself, but in Christ and in his neighbor. Otherwise he is not a Christian. He lives in Christ through faith, in his neighbor through love. By faith he is caught up beyond himself into God. By love he descends beneath himself into his neighbor. Yet he always remains in God and in his love, as Christ says in John 1[:51], 'Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.'

Califórnia

1. Em rota para a Califórnia, escala breve no Aeroporto Internacional de Salt Lake City, no Utah,  situado a 1288 metros de altitude, rodeado de montanhas. Pareceu-me que nos picos mais altos ainda alvejava alguma neve. Depois de quatro anos a viver nas flatlands do Midwest, fiquei ligeiramente embevecido.

2. Noite em San Ramon, cidade-satélite de Oakland e de São Francisco. Casa de Maralyn K,  de 85 anos. Uma amiga sua casou com um português e, depois de visitar Portugal, trouxe-lhe de lá um Galo de Barcelos. Maralyn não sabia que o seu hóspede deste fim-de-semana também seria português. Ficou felicíssima com a coincidência e, ainda mais, com o parentesco entre o nome do galo e o meu.

3. Maralyn contou-me histórias da sua família e do brasão que tem pendurado na sala de estar. Contou-me também os contactos que teve com portugueses na região de São Francisco e, nas primeiras décadas da sua vida, na de Los Angeles.

4. Tive parentes chegados a viver na Califórnia durante 31 anos. Ainda tenho cá parentes afastados, a maior parte desconhecidos. Quem é o açoriano que não tem?

5. Horas antes, no vôo entre Salt Lake City e Oakland, a mulher sentada ao meu lado também me contou as experiências que tem com portugueses na Califórnia. Vive em Oakland, num bairro maioritariamente português. Citou-me os nomes de família que conhece, com precisão. Aqui não há enganos: Silva, Pereira, Rocha, Simões, Mendes, Cardoso, Soares, Coelho.
