“On the Nature of Daylight” é uma composição do germano-britânico Max Richter que integra o seu álbum The Blue Notebooks, de 2004. “This Bitter Earth,” uma canção escrita por Clyde Otis e interpretada pela icónica cantora norte-americana Dinah Washington, foi gravada em 1959 e lançada oficialmente em 1960.

Em 2010, Robbie Robertson combinou as duas gravações e integrou-as na banda sonora do filme Shutter Island, de Martin Scorsese. O resultado é um mash-up agradável que empresta uma boa roupagem à profundidade existencial da letra da canção original e à intensidade da voz de Dinah Washington.
